FROM JERSEY CITY TO KANSAS: REFLECTIONS ON COMMUNITY, COURAGE AND COMMITMENT
This past weekend, I had the incredible honor of spending time in Overland Park, Kansas, where I was warmly welcomed by Subhan and Farah and embraced by a vibrant, thoughtful, and inspiring community.
As someone who began his journey in public service at a young age as the youngest elected official in Jersey City’s history, as well as the youngest Muslim elected official in the country, I’ve often spoken about the importance of showing up early and taking risks. In Kansas, I had the opportunity to share a piece of that journey with dozens at a local fundraiser and more than a hundred community members throughout my visit.
The conversations we shared weren’t just about politics, they were about purpose. I spoke about what it meant to step into leadership before I had all the answers, and how essential community support was in making that leap worth it. I emphasized that encouraging young people in our communities to run for office isn’t just a feel-good slogan, it’s a strategic investment in our long-term power, representation, and ability to create lasting change.
What struck me most was the depth of the questions I received and the sincerity of the people I met. From parents raising the next generation of leaders to students figuring out how to make their voices heard, there was a shared sense of urgency and hope.
I also shared something I hold dear: the work we do in Jersey City is not just for Jersey City. It’s part of a broader fight. A national one. In a time of growing division and injustice, we must be the kind of people who don’t shrink back. We must be the kind of people who stand up for ourselves, for our neighbors, and for those who are often unheard. We are a community that does not run, does not cower, does not hide, but rather stands up in the face of injustice.
Overland Park reminded me that this fight isn’t isolated to coasts or major cities. The same courage, conviction, and community spirit that moved me to run for office at 19 is alive and well in Kansas—and in communities across the country.
To everyone I met in Kansas: thank you. Thank you for your warmth, your curiosity, and your belief that we can build something better together.
